Workshop 1: Mobile Commerce - Direct Marketing Goes Digital

Facilitated by: Chris Barraclough, MD & Chief Strategist, STL Partners/Telco 2.0 Initiative

With the mass-market adoption of smartphones, more direct marketing money is now being spent on digital solutions. Armed with detailed data about smartphone users, a digital commerce broker can now make highly targeted offers and recommendations.

That is the theory.  In practice, would-be brokers of mobile marketing and advertising face a number of challenges.  This session will explore:

  • To attract merchants and brands, a digital commerce broker needs consumers. To attract consumers, a broker needs merchants and brands. How do you tackle the chicken and egg problem?
  • How can you win consumers and regulators trust?
  • What is the best way to deliver timely offers to smartphones? Which bearer - mobile, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC?  Which media - QR codes, mobile apps, SMS, a digital wallet, etc.?
  • How can a new entrant best co-operate and/or compete with established digital commerce brokers, such as Alibaba, Facebook and Google?

Workshop 2: Growing Value in Digital Content and Entertainment

Facilitated by: Andrew Collinson, COO & Research Director, STL Partners/Telco 2.0 Initiative

Digital content and entertainment growth creates challenges and opportunities for new and existing players in the media and entertainment industries and for telecoms operators.

For example, entertainment players seek to grow distribution and combat piracy, while operators have to cope with the network demands of third-party digital entertainment services, manage churn, and grow their own digital services.

The goal of the workshop is to share knowledge between sectors and geographies, and explore 'how best to grow a viable digital content and entertainment ecosystem that serves the needs of consumers, content creators, media companies and communications companies?'

In this session, we will cover:

  • New digital content & entertainment business models and case studies from Telcos and content companies
  • Challenges, pain-points, and disruptive opportunities impacting the content industry
  • What strategies should each player pursue to optimise its place in a viable, growing ecosystem?
  • What are the actions needed to deliver this?

15.45 - 17.15 Economic Development Strategy & Regulation for a New ‘Digital Asia’

Facilitated by: Philip Laidler, Consulting Director, STL Partners/Telco 2.0 Initiative

The Digital Economy is a global phenomenon developing at bewildering speed, yet the opportunities for many Asian countries are unique and Asian technology players are well positioned to shape the evolution of the digital economies in their markets.

Local technology players (including Telco’s) and public agencies have the opportunity and responsibility to guide the development of their digital markets. This requires clear policy to nurture developing digital ecosystems: the people, innovation networks and venture finance that will drive growth.   Regulation, in particular, is important in creating a ‘level playing field’ which does not unfairly impede one group of players over another.

This session will discuss the following key question:

  • What initiatives should be adopted by established TMT parties (operators, regulators, technology providers) to accelerate the beneficial development of local digital economies?
